I decided today, in the shower, that “Shells” needed work. As much as I hate going back and remixing stuff that I’ve considered done for a while now, “Shells” had become a convoluted mess. Thinking about it in the context of a live performance, there is no way we could cover all those parts between us, so I decided to strip it down to its core elements, which means it is now mostly one guitar, bass, and drums. There are still some flourishes from the acoustic and the heavy guitar, but it’s much cleaner now. I’ve also stripped back some of the extraneous vocal parts. Overall, I’d say it’s a much better version now.

Here’s a new song we’ve been working on called “tunnel vision.” Considering that very little work has been done to the recordings, it’s actually pretty good. Still need to add a bass line and maybe some drums.

We started a new song that doesn’t have lyrics or a name yet, but it has a kind of grunge/punk feel to it. This is a very rough recording, but I thought you guys would like to see what we’ve been doing. I think the instrument parts are pretty complete, but we still need vocals and bass.

Here is a fairly complete version of “now that we’re home.” I can’t call it finished yet because there are still some timing issues to work out and a lot of mixing left to be done, but the various parts are all recorded now. It’s starting to sound pretty good, if I do say so myself.

We now have a fairly good recording of “now that we’re home.” The timing still needs to be cleaned up a little bit and there are a couple minor parts I would like to add in, but otherwise it is coming along quite nicely.

Now you can hear a very rough recording of our new song, tentatively titled “now that we’re home.” This is a quick recording we did during practice just to get a feel for how it would sound to an audience. Enjoy!

This is almost a final version. All the hard stuff, like recording and rerecording and fixing up mistakes, is done. Now it mostly just needs the simple stuff–tweaking the levels, panning, and fixing the compression so it isn’t so noticeable. The final version will probably be done by the end of next week.
We had been hoping to get our demo/EP finished by the end of the year, but that’s obviously not going to happen. I think that we can definitely have it done by summertime next year, though.

We also have a studio recording of “older” now. This one will need a lot more work than “low tide,” unfortunately. We recorded with entirely too much distortion, so it’s difficult to hear exactly what the guitars are doing, so we will probably need to re-record that to get it to sound right. The vocals also sound kind of off to me. It might just be the mic I was using. I had hoped it would be a better vocal mic, but it might not work out like I wanted it to. Eventually there will be drums and a bass part, but not quite yet.

Formerly known as “tropical instrumental,” we now have a studio recording of our song “low tide.” This is an extremely rough mix. Eventually there will be drums, though we haven’t decided on the nature of those drums (this song might end up part techno). I have to figure out the proper mix of the acoustic and the guitar it is copying. We might end up re-recording all of it sans delay so we can just run it all through one delay to make sure the timing is right, but we’ll see. For now, it is what it is.

I like to look back and see how far we have (or haven’t) come, so I thought it would be fun to post our first recorded version of “shells”. It’s kind of endearing in it’s own special way.
